Iridescent hematite from Graves Mountain, Georgia, is a captivating mineral specimen known for its striking play of colors. The iridescence of this hematite is a result of thin film interference caused by the oxidation of the mineral's surface. As light interacts with the microscopic layers of hematite, it undergoes interference, creating the dazzling spectral colors that dance across the specimen's surface.Hematite is a mineral composed primarily of iron oxide (Fe2O3) and is one of the most abundant iron-bearing minerals on Earth. It typically appears with a metallic luster and ranges in color from silver-gray to black.
Hematite often forms botryoidal or reniform masses, but it can also occur as tabular or rhombohedral crystals, though these are less common. It has a hardness of about 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it moderately hard and suitable for use in jewelry and lapidary work. Hematite is found worldwide, occurring in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks, as well as in hydrothermal veins and as concretions. It has practical applications as an iron ore for steel production and pigments, and it is also valued as a collectible mineral and used in jewelry and ornamental carvings.
