Commonly collected colors are yellowish brown and blue, but it can come in many more colors, or even colorless. Most of the larger and higher quality specimens available on the market come from Skardu Valley, Pakistan. However, there are locations in the US such as Topaz Mountain in Utah, and other places like Mexico and Ukraine.
About Smokey Quartz
Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz known for its characteristic smoky brown to gray or black coloration, caused by irradiation of clear quartz crystals during their formation. The intensity of the smoky color can vary depending on the duration and extent of exposure to radiation. It is found in various geological settings, including pegmatites, hydrothermal veins, and sedimentary rocks. It often occurs alongside other minerals, such as feldspar, mica, and tourmaline. It can also be artificially irradiated, and in some cases this is not disclosed by the seller. Although the artificial smokies can be beautiful, discerning collectors should use caution when purchasing smokey quartz because of this.
